The nominees: The Father, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, News of the World, Tenet
I underestimated The Father here, which does make great use of its set pieces to disorient its characters and audience. Tenet was my alternate, and it’s a good choice even if I’m sad that “Promising Young Woman” didn’t make the cut. I’m thrilled to have a greater understanding of the other three nominees after interviewing the production designers nominated – congratulations to Mark Ricker (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Donald Graham Burt (Mank), and David Crank (News of the World)!
My current bet to win: I think it will be Mank.
