Golden Globe Nominees: Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
My predictions: 3/5
Who’s missing? Ellen Burstyn (Pieces of a Woman), Saoirse Ronan (Ammonite), Youn Yuh-jung (Minari)
This category had an open spot since Maria Bakalova was in the category, and it was a great opportunity for Helena Zengel (News of the World) to get in for a strong breakthrough performance in a solid film. I didn’t expect Burstyn’s snub, and in her place we have a bit of a surprise in Jodie Foster (The Mauritanian), whose film also earned a nomination for star Tahar Rahim. I’m not sure her inclusion is entirely merited, but it is a worthwhile film. Amanda Seyfried (Mank) and Olivia Colman (The Father) both scored for films that performed very well, while Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy) managed to get in for her very poorly-reviewed movie.
Who will win? I’m honestly not sure. Maybe Close?
