Oscar Nominees: Best Original Song
My predictions: 3/5
My ballot: Come back later this week!
The nominees: “I’m Standing with You” (Breakthrough), Into the Unknown (Frozen II), Stand Up (Harriet), I’m Gonna Love Me Again (Rocketman), I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away (Toy Story 4)
This category features the saddest omission of today: “Glasgow” from “Wild Rose.” It’s a shame, but I guess this list isn’t all bad since most of these songs have grown on me. I can’t say that for the tune from Toy Story 4, though I should have known that voters would be sentimental and nominate Randy Newman for all four of the series’ films. Another animated feature, Frozen II, is here, even though it got snubbed in that race. Harriet is represented along with its nominated star, and Breakthrough, a film I haven’t yet seen, is here as the lone nomination for its film. That’s also true for Rocketman, something I don’t think many expected after its Globe win in this category and the Best Actor race.
My current bet to win: Even without other support for the film, I think Rocketman wins.
