Oscar Nominees: Best Documentary

The nominees: American Factory, The Cave, The Edge of Democracy, For Sama, Honeyland

I had a feeling that “One Child Nation” wouldn’t be included, and I also thought “Apollo 11” might not make the cut, but not enough to predict its omission. Those are the two big surprise misses this year, with American Factory fortunately still getting nominated. Both Syrian films, The Cave and For Sama were nominated, which makes sense given past inclusions in this and the documentary short race. Honeyland is honored both here and in the Best International Feature category, which seems excessive. And though I had it low down on my predictions, I’m pleased to see The Edge of Democracy included. It’s a shame that there wasn’t room for “Midnight Family,” especially in a category that features all but one foreign-language production.

My current bet to win: I’ll pick American Factory over “For Sama.”
