Oscar Nominees: Best Film Editing
My predictions: 3/5, picking “Get Out” and “Lady Bird” over “I, Tonya” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
My ballot: Come back in February!
The nominees: Baby Driver, Dunkirk, I, Tonya, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Because of when I woke up and where I was (Utah), this was the first category that I heard announced. It was a confusing indicator for other races since “I, Tonya” didn’t manage any other nods aside from its two guaranteed acting citations, and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” went on to be snubbed in the Best Director race, making its presence here less than helpful for a Best Picture win. It’s also a sign that the Best Picture race is between “Dunkirk” and “The Shape of Water,” as we’ve always thought, with “Get Out” and “Lady Bird” scoring director bids but missing out here. And then we have “Baby Driver,” joining the group for one of its three nominations. I was pretty sure this was the case, and I double-checked: this is the first time since the Best Picture field was expanded to more than five that two of the nominees here didn’t make that list, and the first time in a decade.
My current bet to win: This could go any way, but I think that Dunkirk will take it.
