Golden Globe Winner Predictions: Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

The competition: Jane Fonda’s Hollywood actress (Youth), Jennifer Jason Leigh’s uppity prisoner (The Hateful Eight), Helen Mirren’s gossip queen (Trumbo), Alicia Vikander’s cunning robot (Ex Machina), and Kate Winslet’s loyal collaborator (Steve Jobs).

For your information: This is Fonda’s fifteen nomination, and she has won seven times. This is Mirren’s fourteenth nomination, and she has won three times, including two trophies out of three nominations in 2006. This is the eleventh nomination for Winslet, who has won three times. In 2008, she won both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Leigh was nominated once before and Vikander is also nominated for “The Danish Girl” this year.

Who should win? Winslet really impressed me in her film, and I’d sooner vote for Leigh in “Anomalisa” and Vikander in “The Danish Girl” than the roles they’re nominated for, even though they were good.

Who will win? There’s no real frontrunner here, and so this will be helpful in determining who might be able to take home the Oscar, though Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander being recognized for what the Globes consider leading roles will change things. It could be any of them, but I’ll bet on Leigh.
