The competition: American Hustle, August: Osage County, The Butler, Dallas Buyers Club, 12 Years a Slave

The rundown: One film seems locked above all for this race, and that’s Birdman. Beyond that, it’s a question of whether something bigger like Selma, Unbroken, or Into the Woods will manage to bump a smaller, tight-knit film like Boyhood, Foxcatcher, or The Imitation Game. An eccentric ensemble piece like The Grand Budapest Hotel is possible, and I’m pulling for a film that I’m also predicting to score a top Golden Globe nomination, Pride, to grab the last spot.
