The nominees: Before Midnight, Captain Phillips, Philomena, 12 Years a Slave, The Wolf of Wall Street

Hello and welcome to my only 100%-correctly-predicted category! This list swapped out “August: Osage County” and “Lone Survivor,” each nominated twice elsewhere, for the WGA-ineligible “Philomena” and “12 Years a Slave.” This is actually a pretty decent list, since whatever my problems with “The Wolf of Wall Street” may have been, the writing was relatively strong. I haven’t seen “Before Midnight,” but it’s good to see at least one film that wasn’t on the rest of Oscar voters’ radar recognized.

My current bet to win: Between “12 Years a Slave” and The Wolf of Wall Street, I pick the latter here.
