Golden Globe Nominees: Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama
My predictions: 3/5, missing Blunt and Bullock
Who’s missing: Abbie Cornish (Bright Star)
So “Bright Star” gets ignored completely, possibly damning star Abbie Cornish to an inevitable Oscar snub. Instead of her and my filler fifth choice, we get Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria) and double nominee Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), both for films that people, including me, weren’t sure how they would play at awards. The other three are expected, representing a wide range of experience, with veteran actress Helen Mirren (The Last Station) and newcomers Carey Mulligan (An Education) and Gabourey Sidibe (Precious). I’m happiest for Mulligan, who was simply wonderful, and also for Blunt, who I think is a great actress and was probably the best part of her film (review coming soon). For those who didn’t watch the nominations announcement this morning, presenter Justin Timberlake made an awkward crack about someone getting lucky tonight, referring to co-presenter John Krasinski (The Office), Blunt’s fiancée. I have yet to see “The Blind Side,” which I’m not really looking forward to though I suppose people do seem to think it’s terrific.
Who could win? I hope it wouldn’t be Sidibe and that the deserving Mulligan will take home the trophy.
What does this mean for the Oscar race? This complicates matters considerably, since fifth nominee Cornish isn’t so certain anymore and has now been replaced by not one but two contenders in the form of Blunt and Bullock. Remember that comedy nominee Meryl Streep is also in the race, so now it’s a six-person contest, and I think I’d actually go with Blunt to take the fifth slot at this point.
