Oscar Nominees: Best Visual Effects
My predictions: 4/5
My ballot: Come back later this week!
The nominees: Avengers: Endgame, The Irishman, The Lion King, 1917, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
There aren’t any surprises on this list, and, for the first time, I’ve seen all of the contenders already. I really thought that “Alita: Battle Angel” had a shot, especially after my very enjoyable conversations with the VFX team at the Disney press day, but it couldn’t bump the de-aging of The Irishman. I also called that 1917 would make the cut for its mesmerizing construction of its war zone landscape. I’m relieved that Avengers: Endgame made the cut since it was so well-deserved, and expected that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker would be here. The Lion King is another great choice.
My current bet to win: I’m torn – it’s a very competitive category. I’ll pick The Lion King for now.
