Golden Globe Winner Predictions: Best Foreign Language Film
The competition: Force Majeure (Sweden), Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem (Israel), Ida (Poland), Leviathan (Russia), Tangerines (Estonia)
For your information: It’s hard to tabulate statistics by country since multiple countries are sometimes credited for a given film. Sweden’s last of many wins was in 1987, Poland shared credit on a 1991 win, Israel won in 2008, Russia has never won, and this is the first nomination for Estonia. Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev was nominated in 2003 for “The Return.” Four of these films made the shortlist for the Oscar race and may be nominated – “Gett” is the only one that didn’t.
Who should win? I haven’t seen “Tangerines” yet. “Leviathan” is depressing but has some strong themes, and I don’t really see what’s so great about both “Force Majeure” and “Ida.” “Gett,” however, is terrific and by far the best film in this category.
Who will win? It’s foolish to bet against Ida, but “Gett” may be able to pull off an upset.
