SAG Nominees: Best Actress in a Supporting Role
My predictions: 3/5, missing Streep and Watts
Who’s missing? Jessica Chastain (A Most Violent Year), Anna Kendrick (Into the Woods)
I’ll start by saying that I haven’t seen “Into the Woods” and therefore I just presumed that Kendrick would be the favorite over Meryl Streep (Into the Woods), and I’ll have to withhold judgment until I see it, though I do suspect that her being her might be partially driven by her being Meryl Streep rather than the performance itself (statement to be revised when I see it). The biggest surprise of this entire nominations announcement is Naomi Watts (St. Vincent). Her pregnant Russian prostitute was one of the funniest parts of the film, I think voters might have been enthused about her for a performance in another film for which she deserved recognition, albeit for a smaller part, but they may have strayed away from that because they did recognize her costar Emma Stone (Birdman), who I’m thrilled to see her. Jessica Chastain, in a busy year, didn’t manage anything, but the other two frontrunners for this award, Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) and Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game).
Who could win? It depends on if there’s one solid frontrunner, and my bet is that Arquette will be just that.
