SAG Nominees: Best Actor in a Supporting Role

My predictions: 3/5, missing Abdi and Bruhl
Who’s missing? Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Tom Hanks (Saving Mr. Banks)

I’m thrilled about the two nominees I didn’t predict, mainly because they’re great actors in movies I really liked and I wasn’t too thrilled with Hanks being included here, and have yet to see “American Hustle” (on the docket for this weekend). Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) is an especially interesting and brave choice for this particular group, but I’m happy to see him here, and I just hope that it means that Tom Hanks will get nominated for an Oscar for this film and not get snubbed with Abdi making it in instead. Daniel Bruhl (Rush) isn’t necessarily a supporting actor, but he was great in his film, which is an underappreciated film that I hope does well with awards voters this season. James Gandolfini (Enough Said) is a wonderful inclusion, and he’s joining the two frontrunners in this race, both of whose films got a huge boost from these nominations: Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club). I really like this category!

Who could win? Either Fassbender or Leto. I’ll go with the latter because of his film’s surprise ensemble nod.
