My predictions: 3/5, picking the “Django Unchained” boys over Arkin and Bardem
Who’s missing? Russell Crowe (Les Miserables), Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained), Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained)
So much for “Django Unchained” getting a running start here. Instead, Javier Bardem (Skyfall) gets a major boost in a shocking first-ever mention for a James Bond film. He’s also joined by an ensemble player singled out from his cast, Alan Arkin (Argo). As I pointed out in my predictions, this marks the first solo SAG nomination for Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook), whose film performed quite well. Even without his costar nominated, Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master) made the cut, as did Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln), who was in plentiful company from his cast members. We’ll have to compare tomorrow’s Globe list to see who the Oscar contenders really are. Something tells me that Bardem won’t be on both lists, and I’d be truly surprised if he was.
Who could win? This seems like the perfect opportunity to reward either Jones or De Niro.
