Golden Globes: Quick Take

Some very brief reactions to tonight's telecast since there isn't much to say and Oscar nominations are right around the corner (predictions all this week; nominations announced January 25th). My prediction average, at least for the film categories, was way up from 8 last year to 11 out of 14 this year. I missed Best Foreign Film - I still haven't seen Danish entry "In a Better World," yet to be released in the United States - as well as Best Original Score (The Social Network) and Best Actor - Motion Picture, Comedy/Musical, which went to Paul Giamatti, who I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing last week. He's a nice guy and he gave a good performance, so congratulations to him. Otherwise, "The Social Network" took home four awards, "The Fighter" and "The Kids Are All Right" won two apiece, and "Barney's Version," "Black Swan," "The King's Speech," "Burlesque," "Toy Story 3," and the abovementioned foreign film each took home one. No change on Oscar frontrunners at this point. Ricky Gervais was a very offensive and relatively unfunny host, Robert DeNiro was a bit of a jerk, and the only real funny moment of the telecast was Tina Fey and Steve Carell making up for their recent film effort not being much of a hit. Andrew Garfield stammering over the world "inspiringly" was also entertaining. What did you think of the show?
