Golden Globe Winner Predictions: Best Foreign Language Film

The competition: Biutiful (Mexico), The Concert (France), The Edge (Russia), I Am Love (Italy), In a Better World (Denmark)

For your information: This category pretty much only rewards films that have actually been released in the U.S. by the end of the year, even if voters are the Hollywood Foreign Press. That discounts “The Edge” and “In a Better World,” both of which have yet to open stateside. I didn’t see “The Concert,” and I’m not sure many others did either. France has been nominated every year but one since 1999, and only won once – for a much more high-profile film, “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.” Statistics beyond that are hard to summarize due to changes in the category over the years and the crowning of multiple winners a number of years ago. France has received over fifty Globe nominations, winning at least ten times. Only Italy comes close to that number, with somewhere around thirty, followed by the other three with under ten.

Who should win: I’d be happy with either of the two I’ve seen.

Who will win: A real toss-up between “Biutiful” and “I Am Love.” I’ll pick I Am Love.
