Tuesday’s Top Trailer: She’s Out of My League (Red Band Trailer)

Welcome to a new weekly feature here at Movies with Abe, Tuesday's Top Trailer. One of my favorite parts about going to see movies is the series of trailers that airs beforehand and, more often than not, the trailer is far better than the actual film. Each week, I'll be sharing a trailer I've recently seen. Please chime in with comments on what you think of the trailer and how you think the movie is going to be.

She’s Out of My League – Opening March 12, 2010

The trailer for this movie has been floating around for a while, but this version is considerably newer. Red band trailers are still fairly rare for films, but they often offer a much more accurate indication at what a film will really be like, and include more of the racier, and hopefully funnier, jokes. Now, it’s very likely that this film will not be good at all, but that doesn’t mean the trailer isn’t entertaining. The addition of a few choice expletives really drives home the hilarity, especially when coming out of the mouths of the supporting characters. One of the most interesting and exciting performances will likely come from Krysten Ritter, most recently seen on “Breaking Bad” as Jesse’s druggie girlfriend and cast in this film in a role that might best be described as a Lizzy Caplan type. Also visible in the supporting cast are faces like T.J. Miller (“Carpoolers,” “Cloverfield”), Debra Jo Rupp (“That 70s Show”), and Kyle Bornheimer (“Worst Week”). What’s more thrilling to me is the two leading stars. This plot has been explored to death in the past, and while it could be funny, I’m more looking forward to the stars than the story. Jay Baruchel is exactly the right kind of actor for this part, having turned in a classic performance as the star of Judd Apatow’s “Freaks and Geeks” follow-up TV series “Undeclared” and proven his durability in other films with 2008’s “Tropic Thunder.” Alice Eve is a wonderful actress who was lovely as one of two love interests in “Starter for 10,” and hasn’t gone on to achieve widespread fame and success like either of her costars, James McAvoy and Rebecca Hall (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona”). Of the scenes in the trailer, none seem overly funny, but hopefully Ritter will have much to do and the chemistry between the two leads will work effectively. The most enjoyable scene in the trailer is probably Alice’s announcement to the table about how much she makes working a wedding, followed by a steady eruption of swearing from the whole table. This could be fun, and I’d definitely be up for seeing it when it comes out. What do you think?
