The competition: “Broken Embraces” (Spain), “Baaria” (Italy), “The Maid” (Chile), “A Prophet” (France), and “The White Ribbon” (Germany)
For your information: “Broken Embraces” and “The Maid” are ineligible for the Oscars because their respective countries submitted different films. In past years, this award has gone to a film in release at the time of the awards rather than one that doesn’t make it over to the U.S. until later (like the Oscars often do). Pedro Almodovar has won this award twice, for “Talk to Her” and “All About My Mother.” Giuseppe Tornatore won for “Cinema Paradiso.”
Who should win: I haven’t seen “Baaria” or “The Maid,” but the other three are all great, and “Broken Embraces” is the best.
Who will win: I think this goes to Pedro for Broken Embraces.
