My predictions: 4/5, missing Kruger
Not nominated at the Golden Globes:Kruger
Who’s missing: Julianne Moore (A Single Man), Samantha Morton (The Messenger)
Here’s where we get the huge surprise inclusion: Diane Kruger (Inglorious Basterds). She was good in the film, sure, though hardly as deserving as French costar Melanie Laurent. It’s a fun inclusion, I suppose, but not at the expense of Julianne Moore, whose snub I predicted, though I had a different actress replacing her. The other four are looking good. Both Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) made it in despite the shocking snub of their film in the Best Ensemble category. Penelope Cruz (Nine) is the sole performer from her film with a nomination here, though the entire cast is up for Best Ensemble. Rounding out the group is Mo’Nique (Precious), whose nomination is hardly surprising.
Who could win? It won’t be Kruger, but otherwise it’s up for grabs. I’d guess Kendrick.
What does this mean for the Oscar race? Not good news for poor Julianne Moore, but it doesn’t exactly make Kruger a contender, especially considering the appearance of non-starters like Catherine Keener (Into the Wild) and Cloris Leachman (Spanglish) here in past years. I think the lineup could still be the same as the Globes, and Farmiga is certainly a much safer bet now with both Globe and SAG mentions.
