My predictions: 1/5, predicting only “Up in the Air”
Who’s missing: “An Education,” “Invictus,” “Julie & Julia,” “The Last Station,” “Precious,” “A Serious Man”
Quite unexpectedly, this was my worst category this year, but I’m rather pleased with some of the surprise inclusions. This category was announced before the Best Director and Best Picture fields, so when I heard the first film, District 9, I got really excited. It turns out this was the only mention for the film, but it’s still pretty darn exciting. Also fantastic is the love for Inglorious Basterds, which did extremely well today. The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air are now cemented as the Best Picture frontrunners, especially as expected nominees “Invictus” and “A Serious Man” missed out both here and in the Best Picture races. The fifth nominee is more of a surprise, since it’s for the other Meryl Streep film, It’s Complicated. It doesn’t mean much, and probably won’t win. It’s also worth noting the snub of “Precious” here, which did manage to get a Best Picture nod despite no screenplay or director mention.
Who could win? I don’t know, maybe Up in the Air?
What does this mean for the Oscar race? It’s helpful for “District 9,” but otherwise it doesn’t say much since the Oscar categories can hold twice as many nominees, and “It’s Complicated” probably won’t be one of them.
