My predictions: 3/5, missing the tunes from “Avatar” and “Everybody’s Fine”
Who’s missing: Songs from “The Princess and the Frog,” “Where the Wild Things Are,” and “Hannah Montana” (if you consider that a surprise)
I just listened to all of these songs on YouTube to really get a taste for them, and I’m still partial to the two from films I’ve seen, partially because of the way they were used in those films (both music films). Cinema Italiano (Nine) is one of the only original tracks from the film, and though it has its detractors, Kate Hudson does such a terrific job of singing it that it’s hard to completely hate it. The Weary Kind (Crazy Heart) is my absolute favorite, and coupled with Jeff Bridges’ lead performance, it’s really spectacular. I’m not as enthusiastic about the others, which include Winter (Brothers), I Want to Come Home (Everybody’s Fine), and I See You (Avatar). What do you think of these nominees? Search for them on YouTube and have a listen for yourself.
Who could win? Maybe U2 for “Winter,” but I’ll stick with The Weary Kind.
What does this mean for the Oscar race? All five of these songs are eligible at the Oscars, though maybe I shouldn’t root for “The Weary Kind” since the past five winners (!) of this category haven’t gone on to get nominated for an Oscar.
